Twitter in Czech Republic

Twitter is a social network and a microblogging system. Users can post updates (= tweets) in the length  up to 140 characters. These updates are public and every user can follow tweets of anyone f.e celebrities, politicians, sportsmen, newspapers.

There are supposed to be more than 100 000 twitter accounts which either come from the Czech Republic or tweet in Czech language = twitter penetration is approximately 10 %. Out of 229 countries which have tweeted so far the Czech Republic is on 62nd position and its tweets comprise 0,02 % of all tweets. link

Andrej Probst described  structures of Czech twitterers in the following way: Czech twitterers are mostly geeks, bloggers, journalists, marketers, media, artists, shops. link

I joined Twitter a month ago and I fell in love with it immediately. Except my offline friends I follow various newspapers, marketing personalities, news from technology and marketing and in that way I have created my personal information source.

Unlike facebook, twitter is not full of crappy things around. Due to 140 characters

limit, tweets look very smooth and the design is very minimalistic. The advertising is hardly noticeable, there are no application notifications and it´s not full of pictures of the dinners. All that makes finding content, I am really interested in, very easy.

One disadvantage is the lack of people there. Everyone is just on facebook. I know many people who created their twitter account, posted something from time to time and became inactive after a period of time. I have heard an interesting comparison of twitter and facebook on TV: “Twitter is like a  cocktail party. There is a lot of small conversations going on and you have to be a star  to catch attention of others. On the other hand facebook is like a local pub. You mostly sit with people you know and talk just with them ”  This may be the reason why penetration of twitter to the Czech Republic is so weak. We are still more of a “pub” culture while the USA and the UK are much more individualistic cultures and twitter is very popular there. Once I came across one CZ twitter account and its author tweeted there: “It´s Christmas. I wish to get some followers as a Christmas gift”

But in my opinion  it´s important you have something special to share to make people follow you:
1) Be a great  personality from the offline world
2) Post high quality content people would be eager to read.
3) Be a specialist in a certain field.

It doesn't matter if you belong to one of these 3 categories or not, you have to czech :) it out by yourself.
